An art gallery! How straightforward! I thought. Within moments someone had been shot (by whom?--I didn't see them) and I held three bars of platinum. Except they weren't really platinum, they were pewter--or so the expert told me--cheap and common. And I was embroiled suddenly in petty but dangerous intrigue that I had not sought.

Today in the biology capstone class we were asked to rank the following items, in order of moral standing, on a continuum with a competent adult human at one end and a rock at the other: a child, a brain-dead adult, a fetus, a dolphin, a dog, an insect, an alien, a bird, a species, and a tree.

It was an impossible task for me; I could not rank them.
